CHRISTINE ARVEIL

Early Painting

“All art aspires to the condition of music, and Christine Arveil’s paintings exemplify this idea.”
~Alicia Faxon, Arts New England

In the 1980s, Arveil embarked on a quest toward the foundations of painting, restricting herself for two years to stone-ground black ink on white paper. Single large words composed the solo show A mots roseaux, Paris, 1987. Arveil’s work was recognized the same year at the Japanese embassy’s Contemporary Calligraphy landmark exhibition. After this ascetic period, she reverted to colors prepared from dry pigments. Further delving into the European roots of painting, she reproduced medieval manuscript paintings (illumination) which she later taught at the Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio. Her replicas were featured in the 1994 Centre Pompidou exhibition Ecriture.

Arveil’s more recent painting and lacquer work can be seen in the Volcano Project.
