The earlier period was one of technical learning and life sketch drawings. This period was marked by two currents of learning that would later impact on the calligraphy works and the later 2000-2014 paintings. First, the capacity to convey great detail and strength within a reduced number of brush strokes. Second, the use of paper as medium, and the interaction of paper with different painting mediums. This later impacted Christine Arveil’s capacity to inlay paper within complex paintings based on varnish, wood, and gesso mediums.
